A group birthday card with a gift card, without the envelope

It's Marcus's birthday on Friday, so someone is walking desk to desk with a card and an envelope. They're collecting twenties, keeping a list of who gave what, and wondering whether $180 is close enough to a $200 gift card or whether they'll quietly cover the last twenty. Three people say they'll Venmo later. One of them means it.

The envelope is doing two jobs at once. The card holds messages from people who like Marcus, and the envelope holds money, which turns the person carrying it into the office debt collector. HuddleCard keeps the two apart: your team signs the card, and the company pays for the gift.

What a gift from work should do

Start over without the envelope and the list is short:

• Nobody gets asked for money. Even when chipping in is optional, people notice who skipped it.
• The birthday person picks. You don't know whether Marcus would rather have Starbucks or DoorDash, and a gift card for the wrong place tends to end up in a drawer.
• Payroll gets a record. In the US, a gift card from the company counts as taxable wages, however small, so payroll will want a list of who got what.
• It doesn't hang on one person. If the person who usually passes the envelope around is on vacation that week, Marcus should still get a gift.

How it works in HuddleCard

Your team signs the card from a link sent by email, Slack, or Microsoft Teams. The gift comes from your company's own Tremendous account, which an admin connects once:

1. Connect Tremendous. Signing up is free. The money stays in your account, and HuddleCard never marks a gift up.
2. Choose the brands. You decide which brands are on offer, and the birthday person picks one of those.
3. Set an amount. Say $25 for every birthday. Work anniversaries can grow with years of service.

From then on, HuddleCard proposes the coming week's gifts every Monday, and an admin signs off on the list. Nothing is spent without a person saying yes.

On Friday, Marcus opens the card and finds everyone's messages, plus A gift from your team with a Choose your gift button. Marcus clicks through and picks a brand. Nobody on the team was asked for a cent.

If nobody approves a gift in time, the card still goes out on the day and the gift follows. The money only leaves your Tremendous account when Marcus claims it, and you can export a CSV of every claimed gift for payroll.

How Kudoboard handles gift cards
