Automated birthday cards for employees, written by actual coworkers

There's a job at every company that nobody applied for: remembering birthdays. It lands on whoever cares most, which usually means one tired person with a spreadsheet, a recurring calendar reminder, and a growing dislike of the phrase "just a quick card."

Most of that job is coordination. Remember the date, send the link, chase the people who didn't sign, deliver it on the day. Software is good at all of that. The one part that needs a person is writing something kind about a coworker, and that's the part the coordinator never has time for. HuddleCard does the coordinating so everyone else can do the writing.

Setting it up

Add your people one at a time, from a spreadsheet, or by syncing Slack or Microsoft Teams. Include birthdays and work start dates if you have them. If you don't, HuddleCard asks each person for their own birthday, which is theirs to share anyway.

You're done. There's no card to create for each person and no link to paste into a channel. Birthdays and work anniversaries run from there, every week of the year.

What a birthday week looks like

Say Priya's birthday is next Thursday.

The Monday before, everyone who should sign gets a link by email, Slack, or Teams. If three people have birthdays that week, it's one message with three links, not three separate pings. People write a line, add a photo, GIF, or voice note if they like, and get on with their day. Priya doesn't see any of it.

Anyone who hasn't signed gets a nudge before the day. On Thursday, Priya gets her card by email, and in Slack or Teams if you're connected: one page with every message on it, which she can go back to whenever she likes. Nobody on your side had to do anything.

The part that stays human

"Automated birthday card" can sound like a robot wishing everyone a happy birthday in the same words. It isn't. The dates, invitations, reminders, and delivery are automatic. The messages are written by coworkers who clicked a link and meant it.

A few other things you won't have to think about:

• Nobody gets skipped. If nobody signs, the card still goes out with a message from the team, so no birthday passes in silence.
• Quiet birthdays stay quiet. Someone who'd rather not have a fuss can switch their birthday card off themselves.
• Private notes. Anyone signing can mark a message private, so only the birthday person reads it.
• Late signers. Someone who was out that week can still sign afterward, and the birthday person hears about it without a ping for every message.
